The Houston Cougars are proven to be the gift that just keeps on giving this season.

With Thursday’s win, the Cougars tied the school record for conference wins in a single season. It equaled the mark set by the 2018-19 team (16-2, American Athletic Conference) and the 1982-83 team (16-0; Southwest Conference).

Prior to Houston's game against Wichita State the Cougars were fresh off of a 76-57 victory on the road over East Carolina, and showed no signs of slowing down anytime soon. The first half of the game was a slow start for Houston but not unusual for the Houston Cougars.

Houston quickly came back for a 83--66 win against Witchita State Thursday night.

Prior to Thursday’s game, Houston has already clinched the 2022-23 American Athletic Conference regular-season title. It marked the program’s fourth regular-season title in the last five years and the sixth title overall (regular season + tournament) under Head Coach Kelvin Sampson.

Houston will play as the No. 1 seed at the American Athletic Conference Championship, set for March 9-12 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. Houston opens that event in the Quarterfinals at Noon, Friday, March 10, against the winner of the No. 8 seed/No. 9 seed. That game will air on ESPN2 and can be heard on 950 AM KPRC and the Varsity Network app.
