Huhn Talks Houston Spring Game

The Houston Cougars have made it a clear priority to replenish the offensive tackle depth chart with some valuables targets on the board in the 2017 class. Head coach Tom Herman and staff have extended at least 15 offers to tackles in the class, including one to San Antonio (TX) John Jay standout Matthew Huhn who recently made his second trip to TDECU stadium for the Cougars’ spring game.

“I was lucky enough to be able to make it over to their spring game,” Huhn said of his recent trip. “I got to talk with coach Herman some and got catered too real well. It was a really good time and I got a good feel for the entire coaching staff as this was my first time back to Houston since being offered by them. Coach (Jason) Washington is the coach who actually offered me, usually he is the one that comes and sees me but I am pretty sure coach Warehime is coming with him this spring to see me. I also got to talk with coach Applewhite a little too on my visit when I met all of the staff.”

Huhn already feels close with the Cougars and knows they will be one he considers strongly before making a final decision.

“Houston is going to be one of my top teams,” said the 6-foot-7, 270 pound tackle. “I am definitely interested in them and that was one of the reasons I was so happy to get back on campus and really get to know everyone. They’ve got a great football team, great bond, great location, just great period.”

Although Houston is working hard to earn Huhn commitment, there are other schools showing a lot of love to the coveted prospect

“Texas State definitely sends a lot of love,” he said. “SMU also sends a lot of mail. Obviously Houston is one I hear from a lot and Rice too. Those are the teams I have been hearing the most from lately. I also picked up an offer from Michigan a couple of weeks ago. One of their coaches followed me on Twitter and then a day or two later they called and offered, it was kind of surprising.”

Huhn has made it a point to keep track of the Cougars since they became his first unofficial visit during the season last year. The Cougars could have a secret weapon in the works as well in Huhn’s mom.

“I’ve kept up with Houston quite a bit since they were my first unofficial visit last year,” he said. “I’ve payed attention during the year and my mom absolutely loved it there. She went with me and she absolutely loved it.”
