On Sep. 28, The University of Houston Athletics announced linebacker Donavan Mutin as a Semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy. Coming out of high school Mutin was a 3-star with 17 offers and a 5.6 rating from Rivals. After committing to the Houston Cougars in 2017, we first saw Mutin in 2018, as a true freshman who saw action in 10 games in 2018.

The Spring, Texas, native is among 176 student-athletes on the list including 79 at the FBS level. Past winners include Peyton Manning (Tennessee), Chad Pennington (Marshall), Tim Tebow (Florida), and Justin Herbert (Oregon)

Before Houston played Tulsa, Mutin, who maintains a 3.51 GPA in Health Promotion, leads Houston with 25 tackles including 2.0 for loss. The junior has forced a fumble and recovered a fumble this season. On Oct. 27, the National Football Foundation will announce 12-14 finalists, who will each win an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. On Dec. 7, the winner of the 32nd Campbell Trophy will be announced at a star-studded awards dinner at the ARIA Resort & Casino in Las Vegas.
