Boyd Talks Houston, Busy Spring

A lot of people were caught off guard by the success the Houston Cougars, and first year head coach Tom Herman, had in 2015. Herman and his staff capped off a tremendous 13-1 season with a Peach Bowl victory over Florida State by signing the top recruiting class in their history.

That momentum has carried over smoothly with the 2017 recruiting class and one player who they have been working on a lot lately is Arlington (TX) Oak Ridge wide receiver Bronson Boyd who has seen his college recruitment explode over the last few weeks.

“Recruiting really started picking up for me a lot two weeks ago heading into spring ball,” said the 6-foot-3, 183 pound standout. “A lot of coaches are coming to my school to watch me practice. As a matter of fact some schools are coming by this week heading into the start of our spring practice the following week. I know Houston, Texas A&M, Duke, Indiana, Arizona, UCLA, Washington State, Illinois, Oregon, Texas and more have all said they will be coming by.”

Of course when a prospect emerges onto the scene to become coveted so quickly, there are always a handful of schools that are standing out in the process for the effort they are putting into recruiting the player. At the moment Boyd says a few are really working hard to earn his commitment.

“The schools recruiting me hardest at the moment would be Houston, Colorado State, Texas A&M, Wisconsin, Texas Tech and Oregon off the top of my head,” he said. “With Houston I have been dealing the most with coach (Darrell) Wyatt and I have also been dealing with coach Herman some as well. I took a trip down to see the school for the first time last week and it was great. They have great coaches and a great atmosphere there. They are rebuilding the locker room right now and their facilities are going to be top notch. Houston is definitely a top choice right now.

“Houston also brought me to their admissions director so I could talk about classes with them,”Boyd added. “Obviously they’re really high on academics there and that is something other schools haven’t done for me.”

With a ton of traffic making their way through spring practice to see Boyd, they may be making some final pushes for his verbal commitment. He has already set a time frame for making a decision.

“I talked with my parents and I decided that after spring ball is over (May 15) I will make a top 6 and then I will look to make a commitment at the end of May.”

Boyd finished with 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns and was voted to the Southwest Preparatory Conference All-State Football team as a junior in 2015.
