Coogs Get A Much Needed Win
The Houston Cougars men's basketball team was able to put a stop to their two game losing streak on Sunday afternoon at Hofheinz Pavilion. They had five separate players chip in with double digit scoring efforts to help seal the 77-55 win over their conference opponent in the Scarlett Knights of Rutgers.
The Cougars took a seven point lead into the half before outscoring the Knights by 15 in the second half to finish off a much needed victory. Although the lead would change hands during the second half of the contest, the Cougars used a cold stretch by the Knights shortly after to go on an offensive run and safely put the game away.
The Cougars got plenty of help from their freshman forward, and Houston native, Danrad "Chicken" Knowles. Knowles played 22 minutes in the game, going six for eight from the field, and scoring 16 points to lead all scorers in the game. He also chipped in with eight rebounds, an assist, one steal, and four blocks to cap off a very active game for the freshman.
Other contributor's for the Coogs were sophomore forward Danuel House who added 14 points of his own, to go along with six rebounds. Also, forward TaShawn Thomas finished with 12 points for the Cougars in the win.
The Scarlet Knights gave the cougars an honest run for their money for short stretches of the game, and were led by their junior guard Myles Mack, who contributed 15 points to go along with three rebounds, three assists and four steals. The only other player for the Knights who finished in double figures was their junior forward Kadeem Jack who managed to have 10 points and nine boards in 31 minutes played.
The Cougars, now (11-7, 3-2 AAC), will next travel to #23 Memphis Tigers (13-4, 3-2 AAC) for a conference showdown that could go a long way in deciding the Cougars "post-season" aspirations. The game tips off at 8:00 ET in Memphis.
