Rivals250: A Look At The QBs
The Houston Cougars are fresh off of putting the finishing touches on their 2013 recruiting class and although they still are looking at a couple stragglers in the class they are for all intents and purposes done and will begin to look at the next crop of high school standouts that represent the 2014 recruiting class.
Earlier this week Rivals released it's initial Rivals250 rankings list for the 2014 class and there are a number of players under center that are either already being targeted or are likely to be targeted by the Cougars as they dig into the class.
The quarterbacks that standout in the ranking, that can be seen here, that seem to fit what Houston has looked for in the past an where they have looked are David Cornwell from Norman (OK) North High School. Cornwell has early offers already from some solid programs including Auburn, Miami and in state power Oklahoma State but fits the type of player Houston would be looking for. He checks in at number 63 in the country on Rivals' initial list.
Another player that seems to fit one direction Houston has been rumored to be looking is dual-threat signal caller Brandon Dawkins from Westlake Village (CA) Oaks Christian. Dawkins holds an early offer from Notre Dame and has shown the ability early on in his career to hurt opposing defenses through the air and with his feet and being on the outskirts of Los Angles shows him to be well within standout recruiter Jamie Christian's footprint. Dawkins checks in at number 134 on the list.
Another Oklahoma standout that has gotten a lot of early attention is Edmond (OK) Santa Fe quarterback Justice Hansen who resides soundly in recruiting coordinator Zac Spavital's pipeline state of Oklahoma. Hansen has a ton of early offers from solid programs like Auburn, Oklahoma, Missouri and Texas A&M so the competition is stiff for him but you never know how things will play out over the next 11 months. Hansen checks in at number 140 on the initial list.
Some other players that land outside of the Rivals250 for 2014 but standout as possible early targets for Houston are fellow Oklahoma standouts Colin Feller from Elk City (OK) High School and a little more in the wheel house for Spavital is Broken Arrow (OK) signal caller Coleman Key who of course plays for Zac's dad Steve.
A couple of the early offers Houston does already have out in the class is Richmond (TX) Bush's Ronald Monroe, who is a dual-threat type of player, and Fort Worth (TX) All Saints Episcopal's Foster Sawyer who is more of a pro-style quarterback.
Other names that stand out amongst 2014 quarterbacks reporting early interest from Houston is Humble (TX) Summer Creek dual-threat Aaron Sharp who camped with Houston last summer, Clear Creek (TX) standout Jarrett Hildreth, Canadian (TX) quarterback Ben Arbuckle who also camped last summer with Houston and the local duo of Darrell Colbert, who has obvious connections to Houston, and Luke Klingler who also has obvious ties to Houston and will be looking to bounce back from a torn ACL at the beginning of last season.
Although there are a number of options and most that will likely get looks and or offers from Houston there are always new players emerging as well and the differing tastes of recruiters around the country can put more emphasis on players that sometimes fall outside of the Rivals rankings system.
