Leday Jumps On Houston Offer

The Houston Cougar and their famed air attack make it possible to catch the attention of wide receivers in the recruiting world. With an offense that traditionally has thrown the ball as much as any other in the country, skill position players are always aware of the opportunities the Cougars can offer them.

Despite a down season offensively in 2012, they still have shown that the philosophy of staying the same on the offensive side of the ball is attractive to recruits. One case that proves that point recently is that of Port Arthur (TX) Memorial receiver John Leday who quickly jumped on an offer from the Cougars earlier in the week.

"They started recruiting me about a month or so ago, said the 6-foot, 180 pound receiver. I have been talking to coach (Jaime) Christian and he called me Monday and offered and I committed."

In Houston Leday sees an opportunity to come in and fight for playing time early, and he is willing to work to get their sooner rather than later.

"I've watched a few of their games on tv and I like their offense a lot, he said. "I'm trying to go into Houston and play right away. I am going to work hard and continue to work hard when I get there and try to get to that starting position."

Despite the proximity to Houston, the Port Arthur standout has never been to campus. That will soon change as he and another Houston target will take in the campus on an official visit after the holidays.

"I am going to take my official visit there on January 11," said the speedy receiver of his first trip to campus. "I've never been over there before so I am looking forward to it. I am going to go with my teammate Matthew Romar, they are recruiting him too."

As the recruiting scene gets more hectic with signing day quickly approaching there is a good chance the emerging Leday will get more attention. He says that will not change his decision.

"I'm happy where I am at," he said of his recent decision. "I've been wanting to go to Houston for a while and that is where I am going."

Leday missed most of his junior season with injury before emerging as a solid threat in his final season with Memorial. He was selected as first team all-district for district 21-5A this season.
