With a switch back to the 4-3 defense for the Cougars the need to continue to build depth at the defensive end position does not change but the need for speed rushers off the edge does. One player in the 2012 class who will work towards being that guy is Hamshire (TX) defensive end Cameron Malveaux.
In today's initial installment of this year's "Getting to Know" series we take a look at Malveaux who has a great frame and tremendous athleticism...
An up-close and personal look:
WHAT'S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT FROM YOUR HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL CAREER?
"My first touchdown against Splendora. When I caught that ball I just felt like no one could stop me and that's just what happened. I ran and I didn't stop. But as I crossed the goal line I did not feel any need to celebrate because I worked so hard at practice to get where I was at that it seemed I'd been there before. That made it feel even better."
DO YOU HAVE A PRE-GAME RITUAL?
"I don't like to speak to anyone the entire time. Grab something to eat about 4 hours before the game, take a nap. Wake up. I sit in the locker room and listen to my music and focus on the job that I have at hand. Visualize winning. Strap up. I'm ready for warm-ups."
AT WHAT POINT DID YOU REALIZE THAT YOU HAD THE ABILITY TO PLAY D-I FOOTBALL?
"The funny thing about the is everybody thought that I would be going to play D1 Basketball. My athletic ability started to kick in my sophmore year. I began to get stronger, faster, and somewhat coordinated. My junior year of football I played strictly defense. I began to excel at defensive end and become a better football player."
WHAT POSITION WILL YOU BE PLAYING AT HOUSTON?
"I will be playing defensive end."
ARE YOU EXPECTING TO REDSHIRT YOUR FIRST SEASON ON-CAMPUS?
"I think that I will get redshirted just because of my weight. I'm 6'6'' and I'm weighing around 220 but I have the frame to be a lot bigger. That is probably not the weight I need to be at to be a weapon on the D1 level at this time, so I would think yes."
WHAT IS ONE THING THAT YOU NEED TO WORK ON IN ORDER TO PLAY AT THE NEXT LEVEL?
"I would say that I could get better with my hands and just working on my finesse moves as a pass rusher in D1 college football. As any athlete would say I would still like to be stronger, quicker, and more explosive also."
BESIDES FOOTBALL, WHAT ELSE ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO AT HOUSTON?
"Besides football, I think that I am looking forward to my education that I will be getting. I've heard great things about the education at Houston and I know that I will be excel both in the classroom and on the football field."
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FOOD?
"I would have to say beef fajitas. I'm so thankful God gave somebody the idea to put beef in a flour tortilla."
WHAT IS THE LAST ALBUM YOU LISTENED TO?
"Tyga's New Album - Rise of The Last King."
WHAT PERSON, DEAD OR ALIVE, WOULD YOU LIKE TO SIT DOWN AND HAVE DINNER WITH?
"Kobe Bryant (THE BEST EVER TO PLAY THE GAME)."
DO YOU HAVE A NICKNAME?
"People just call me Cam."
WHAT DO YOU PLAN ON MAJORING IN AT HOUSTON?
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE MOVIE?
"Remember the Titans."
WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE FEMALE CELEBRITY?
"Ahhhh that's a hard one...I'm gonna go with Meagan Good"
A look at the recruiting process:
WHAT ONE THING WAS THE DETERMINING FACTOR IN YOUR DECISION?
"One thing that really made me like the University of Houston a lot was the fact that it wasn't that far away from home. My home is about one hour and a half from here, so distance isn't a problem."
IS THERE A HOUSTON COACH THAT YOU FEEL ESPECIALLY CLOSE TO?
"I would have to say coach Hall because he was my recruiting coach and is also going to be my defensive end coach."
WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT DURING THE RECRUITING PROCESS?
"When we went into the position room on campus and the defensive line coaches had us doing drills like it was practice already."
DID YOU MAKE FRIENDS WITH ANY CURRENT PLAYERS OR OTHER INCOMING FRESHMAN DURING THE PROCESS?
"I became good friends with a few seniors like Hayden and Stewart. I also communicated with a few sophomores and juniors. As far as freshman I met half of them at the visit and they seemed pretty cool. I communicate with them now on Twitter and Facebook."
WHAT SCHOOL WOULD YOU HAVE CHOSEN IF YOU HADN'T SIGNED WITH THE COUGARS?
"If I had not signed with Houston I would probably end up going to Lamar University in Beaumont so that I could still be close to home."
The future and goals:
WHAT NUMBER WOULD YOU LIKE TO WEAR AT HOUSTON?
"I want to have number 11."
WHAT IS YOUR PERSONAL GOAL FOR THIS SEASON?
"To weigh 240 pounds."
WOULD YOU LIKE TO SAY ANYTHING TO THE HOUSTON FANS?
