Another big win for Houston in what was probably the toughest C-USA opponent thus far.

Here are a few thoughts:

Houston's special teams play was an obvious advantage today as the blocked several kicks, returned one for 2 points and made all PAT's and field goals. It was likely the difference in the game as USM played very well today in all phases except special teams. Their kicking game was atrocious today and it is a similar spot as what Houston was in a few weeks back before Matt Hogan stepped up and secured the kicking spot.

Fendi Onobun is paying off well on the special teams now as he had a couple blocks today. On the first block he and L.J. Castile could have either blocked as they were both way up there.

Case Keenum was lights out today. I know everyone has seen the stats but because it looks so nice, he you go again: 45 of 53 for 559 yards and 5 TD's. Those numbers could very well vault him back into the serious Heisman talks again in a year when none of the favorite horses from the "big programs" seem to want to run away with it.

Congrats to A. J. Dugat who had an improved game today and caught his first collegiate TD. He showed some flashes today at both receiver and in the return game of things to come in the next few years.

James CLeveland continues to make a huge impact in the receiving game this year with 13 catches for 190 yards and 2 TD's. Huge numbers for the newcomer and I think he has more in the tank when it is needed.

Charles Simms stepped up on an off day by Beall and led the rushing offense with 14 rushes for 95 yards and a score. The beauty of having so many talented weapons was shown today. When a player is not on as Beall was not early, there are others who can be plugged in and step up. With the exception of Keenum this team has the ability to plug someone else in at any position and be ok.

Nick Saenz had a nice game other than one play when he bit on the play action and let a receiver get behind him for a score. Saenz ran the failed PAT back 100 yards for the two points and had a couple big pass break-ups as well.

I am sure I am missing something here, but will add more as it comes to me. Feel free to chime in with some thoughts or replies...

If ya'll think we are tough you must wear panties. This is the worst team USM has put on the feild in years.

Boy, that was a classy statement.

I was actually trying to show a little respect to a team that came in and gave Houston a great game and nearly took advantage of Houston weakness against the run game to steal a win.

Losing puts people in a bad mood.

I liked the 3 man kick return formation. This gives us yet another dimension to an already dangerous return team.

USM has won more than 7 games once since 2004 and only twice since 2001 yet they want to talk about this being their worst season in a long time. They were 5-3 coming into yesterday. Sounds a lot like every other season this decade.

And as bad as we are we can still compete with u. Plus we can put 30,000 plus in our stadium in a town of 75,000 people.

Your program should be light years ahead of where u are. You got thrown to the curb from the SW Conference for a reason

Posted on 11/1 6:37 PM | IP: Logged

Yawn. Come back to talk noise to us when your team beats a BCS conference team and actually does Conf USA some good.

Now, now, be tolerant! This guy is most definitely not typical of Southern Miss fans; I have met far too many of them who are supremely nice folks. I have a lot more respect for their team than this guy seems to have for ours. They always play us tough.

And - for most of the last decade, they have had the best team in the state of Mississippi - better than Ole Miss, better than Miss State; and they are treated in Mississippi by those others exactly the way we are treated in Texas by uta and atm. They are our blood brothers!

IREAGLE is a troll. Ignore the child. He does not represent Southern Miss. Whose fans by and large are very classy. Way better then those straw Aggies from Lubbock who visited earlier this year. Southern Miss is one of the bright spots of CUSA.

This.

It sure was an exciting game to listen to, wish we could have made a few more plays and come out of it with the W. Hopefully we can make the adjustments and meet ya'll in the CUSA Championship game. Good luck until then.

SMTTT!
