Following each game CougarsDen.com will recognize the standout performers by handing out our game balls. Here are the game balls from Houston's 47-46 home loss to BYU
Derrick Mathews - The standout junior linebacker might have had the best game of his career at Houston. Of his 12 tackles, four were for a loss including three big sacks (one of which was the third quarter safety). He also had a huge pick-six in the first quarter to give Houston an early 21-17 lead in the game, their first.
Daniel Spencer - After having such a tough season last year, including troubles with drops and an injury that finished him for the year in November, Spencer has really had some bright spots this season. Saturday he had seven catches for 186 yards and a touchdown that Cougar fans should watch SportsCenter for tonight.
Xavier Maxwell Another player that had struggles last season, his being an illness that put him in the hospital and forced him to miss most of the season, that has emerged as a legitimate threat this season. Maxwell had five catches but made them count, racking up 136 yards and a touchdown.
Thomas Bates - Although Bates was picked on a times in Saturday's loss, he had two huge interceptions that helped a defensive effort that kept the Cougars in the game until the end. He also had 6 tackles in the game and another pass break-up.
Demarcus Ayers - We talked in the Head to Head piece about Ayers' steady improvement as a kick returner and he didn't disappoint Saturday racking up 167 kick-off return yards including an explosive 95 yard touchdown to give the Cougars their first points in the game. Next up for the Cougars will be next Saturday's road conference game with Rutgers which will kick-off at 11:00 AM
