We break into our top 10 now in our pre-camp countdown of the 25 key Cougars for the team's upcoming 2013 football season. With just 13 days remaining before the team's first practice, everyone is starting to get antsy for the beginning of the season.
We continue the Key Coogs series, which is sponsored by Chastang Ford, with a look now at number 10 on our list senior cornerback Zach McMillian who enters his final season with the Cougars as a third year starter.
McMillian has been a mainstay opposite D.J. Hayden for the last two years and they have done a good job. In all honesty, the pass coverage from the safety position has just started to improve, giving the cornerbacks a little more cushion in their coverage which should help improve the pass defense as a whole.
Always good for a great quote off the field and a fierce competitor on the field, McMillian will be counted on as a leader on the 2013 defense and seemed to have stepped his vocal leadership during the summer workouts. This summer marks the first full offseason that he has been able to participate in without an injury and has shown with McMillian adding some weight.
McMillian was a 2012 Conference USA Honorable Mention selection and like a lot of other players profiled in the countdown thus far enters the season with a ton of experience behind him. He finished the season strong in 2012, after Hayden's unfortunate injury ended his collegiate career, with interceptions in the final three games to help him finished tied for the Conference USA lead with five.
With improved safety help, McMillian's side of the field should be the side that sees less action in 2013 as the Cougar legacy looks to cap off his career on Cullen Blvd.
