Less than two week to go know until the start of the Houston Cougars pre-season camp which hits the field Saturday August 3 for the first time to begin preparations for the season opener against visiting Southern University on Friday August 30 at Reliant Stadium.
As the start of camp inches closer, we also inch closer to the top of our Key Coogs list which is sponsored by Chastang Ford and takes a look at the 25 key players whose performance will impact the team's success in 2013.
We continue today with number 11 on our list in sophomore defensive tackle Tomme Mark who played last year a s a true freshman and earned quality minutes throughout the season.
Of the three tackles than landed on campus last year from the 2012 signing class, Mark was the one most ready to play and out of necessity, the Cougars threw him in the mix, giving him valuable game experience early on.
As can be expected, Mark seemed to get better as the season went on and he began to learn the nuances of the tackle position at the collegiate level. He posted his best game however against UTEP when he had six tackles and a recovered fumble.
In the upcoming season his experience will come in handy as he plays a key role in the defensive line rotation that is talented but shallow and will be depended on to help get the push up front that will help the Cougars' defense take a step forward under first year defensive coordinator David Gibbs.
Mark will likely split time at the left defensive tackle spot with fellow 2012 signee, redshirt freshman B.J. Singleton in 2013.
