Tulsa carries momentum into C-USA tournament
While Tulsa finishing the regular season in a tie for second place in Conference USA and earning the No. 2 seed in the league tournament may be a bit of a shocker to some, how it happened is no mystery to at least one coach.
Southern Miss coach Larry Eustachy said the way the Golden Hurricane turned things around after a mediocre non-conference slate and an average-at-best month of January has everything to do with the job Tulsa coach Doug Wojcik has done.
"I'm really proud of Doug and his team," Eustachy said. "When you watched them on tape early, they were just terrible, and I mean that in a good way. Where he's gotten his team to now, that's good coaching. He's got good players, good listeners and good talent."
The Golden Hurricane closed out the regular season winners of eight of its last 10 games, and it evolved throughout the season from a one-man show with senior guard Justin Hurtt leading the way to a very balanced team. And in that process, Hurtt did not have to take a step back in his scoring.
